Most recipes will not be in metric, but some will.  Not because I am in Canada, but as a reflection on the original source of the recipe.  Recipes adapted from my many English sources may be weighed in grams.

Recipes will state if it is necessary to preheat the oven.  In general, when baking and roasting the oven should always be preheated.  It is not quite as necessary when cooking or reheated an assembled dish such as a casserole, but it may take longer to heat the dish.

When baking cakes use room temperature fat and eggs.  You can make an adequate cake with cold eggs and butter, but if you let them  come up to room temp, you will make a great cake.
