Classic Caramel Squares

What's the best part?  The moist, chewy caramel cake, or the thick brown sugar fudge on top?  You decide. 

Preheat oven to 350. Grease or spray a 9x9 pan.

Melt together over med high heat

                                                           1/2c butter or margarine             

                                                           1c brown sugar

When melted, stir in                      

                                                           1c flour                    

                                                            1t vanilla          

                                                           1t baking powder                    

                                                           1/2c milk

Mix well, scrape into pan and bake for 25 minutes.

Let cool, then make the icing.

Place in a heavy pan             

                                                            1c brown sugar                    

                                                            3T butter          

                                                            3T milk or cream

Bring the mixture to a boil.  Let boil for one minute.

Remove from heat.  Beat vigorously with a wooden spoon or whisk until thickened but still pourable.  Pour onto the cake, spread quickly and let set. Cut into squares
