It's hard to describe the difference between a tradition, an old favourite, and the same old thing. I suppose the same old same old happens over and over because of boredom or lack of inspiration.
A tradition tends to get trotted out on a regular occasion, such as a holiday. But an old favourite is always welcome, and you never tire of it. This cookie falls into that category.
It's true that I make this cookie when I am low on flour, or when it's too hot to turn on the oven, or even when I don't feel like washing a cookie sheet. But I mostly make it because it's yummy. Over the years I've tinkered with it, but I never do now. It's perfect as it is.
You probably knew someone who made these cookies when you were growing up. Now it's your turn. You'll be glad you did.
